karthikeyan 04 Dec, 2008 Sateesh Andra (DFJ) – Spirit of entrepreneurship – Tie ISB connect 2008 Learnings
0 Comment

Second post in the series of posts on Tie ISB Connect 2008 Jumpstart learnings. Some of the interesting points Sateesh Andra from DFJ ventures had to say about “Spirit of Entrepreneurship.”

  • Every morning if you wake up excited about an idea, then its an indication that you are getting passionate about the idea and its not just a passing thought.
  • Have to believe in your gut instinct and don’t get bogged down by over analysis.
  • See if your idea is a pain killer or vitamin.
  • Whether to go for VC funding or not – one of the points to consider is what’s the kind of competition existing in the market that you want to enter.
  • Hear what your customers have to say but use your judgment.

We were at the TiE ISBConnect 2008 Jumpstart event earlier this month and we plan to share the the thoughts by some of the speakers in this series of posts.

First post in this series we feature Sashi Reddi the founder of Applabs and FXLabs, and he spoke about his beliefs about the success of an entrepreneur:

- You shouldn’t be a part time entrepreneur i.e. doing your job and running your own business…it does no good to your business.

- Jump before you think – Don’t wait to make a perfect business plan before starting out your business…jump into your work and then tackle the problems as and when they come

- If you are starting a company, it is to make money – it is not meant to ‘help people’

- It’s better to be playing in a fast growing big market with big players than in a small market.

- Start by thinking small – figure out how you are going to make money from the first few customers that you have. Once you’ve done this and have a proven business model, then start thinking big

- Have rich friends or make rich friends – it is very difficult to raise small amount funds (Rs.50 to 100 lakhs) from professional investors. It’s highly possible that your first round of money may need to be raised from friends and family.

- You need to be working on winning your first customer from Day One

- Building your company is not a team effort..YOU have to make it work! Even though will have people working for you, YOU have to lead the team…define the vision…etc.

- The CEO is the main sales guy of the firm

- Don’t look at necessarily having a sexy business idea or business model. Even the most routine and mundane of things can make you money”

Some more speakers’ opinions and viewpoints to follow…stay blogged in!!

What is Open Coffee?

No…its not a coffee making workshop as one of our colleagues first thought.

Its a networking event to help connect, promote and support local startups.

There are open informal discussions on certain topics as needed, so do send out ideas for topics of discussion…or better still…be there with your topics for discussion.

Open Coffee startup meet tomorrow, Saturday, Nov 1st @ 3pm, Ofen, Rd no 10, Banjara Hills

See you there!

karthikeyan 14 Sep, 2008 Startup Saturday at IIIT Hyderabad

This is our first Startupsaturday event which we attended at IIIT , Hyderabad and I can tell you that this is something which all startups should attend. You do get a lot of inputs from people who have done it before and it does help you in avoiding some cardinal mistakes which you might make with your startup apart from getting to meet some cool people. We got a chance to speak about our startup and services we provide for startups. We did get a lot of inputs/suggestions on what kind of help startups are looking for and what companies like us can do to help them. One thing which came out clearly is that startups want EXECUTION, which infact reinforced our ideology of the kind of service we want to provide to startups and that is just not about providing “Consulting” but rather, supporting the startups with execution. We write spreadsheets, content, go for sales, provide new ideas etc for our clients. So the services we provide are more of like LESS TALK AND MORE CODE :) . If you have any suggestions on what startups need and the kind of services we should start providing, do drop a comment or two. We would love to hear from you.
